The Risk Of The Sponsor

Sponsoring someone is one of the most generous things you can do in a professional relationship. It costs nothing, but it spends something far more valuable—your credibility.

When a sponsor puts your name forward, they're attaching their reputation to yours. It means they've seen enough in you to bet on you. Every recommendation is an implicit promise: this person is worth your time, your trust, and your investment. If that promise is broken, the sponsor pays the price too.

That's a risk most mentees never think about, and they should.

So if someone is sponsoring you, take it seriously. Show up. Follow through. Represent them well, not because you owe them, but because they believed in you before you may have believed in yourself.

The sponsors who shaped your career didn't just enjoy your success, they helped make it possible. The least we can do is be worthy of it, and eventually, be that person for someone else.
