Expectancy Violation
When a patient verbalizes an expectation, "I think this is going to hurt," and something different happens, learning occurs. That mismatch between expectation and experience changes the pain processing in their somatosensory cortex. Their brain is literally updating its prediction. This is why verbalization matters.
